Activities throughout the month of October aim to drive interest in careers, promote education and dispel manufacturing myths
(DEARBORN, Mich., Oct. 1, 2014) — SME, an organization dedicated to supporting the manufacturing industry through membership, events, media and workforce development, is proud to support Manufacturing Day as a silver sponsor, as well as organize and promote activities that drive awareness of the vital role manufacturing plays in the economy.
Manufacturing Day, Friday, Oct. 3, is in its third year and was created to address common misperceptions by giving manufacturers the opportunity to open their doors and show what manufacturing is. SME, its local membership chapters, Tooling U-SME and the SME Education Foundation have dozens of initiatives throughout the month of October, including plant and facility tours, presentations from industry experts and student activities that will promote manufacturing awareness.

SME Chapter Activities
SME has more than 300 local senior and student chapters that its members participate in. Many U.S. chapters are hosting events, presentations, tours and other activities on Manufacturing Day and throughout October. To view activities or get involved, go here.

Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education (PRIME) Schools
An SME Education Foundation initiative, Partnership Response In Manufacturing Education (PRIME), actively engages and builds a collaborative network between high school students, educators and industry to grow and train the next-generation workforce, while driving interest and awareness in manufacturing.
Many PRIME schools will be hosting and participating in open houses, tours of manufacturing facilities, career festivals, industry panels and field trips in honor of Manufacturing Day. See a full list of activities here.

In October, SME will launch a new manufacturing awareness campaign, which will allow the current and future workforce to convey the real story behind manufacturing. Through this campaign, SME will tell the tales of manufacturing’s history, as well as where it is today and where it is going tomorrow. Tooling U-SME Platinum Education Center Awards
In connection with Manufacturing Day, Tooling U-SME, a leader in manufacturing training and development, will present its Platinum Education Center designation to community colleges nationwide. The Tooling U-SME Platinum Education Center awards are presented to educational facilities that serve as models in the manufacturing industry when it comes to developing an outstanding learning culture. Schools are selected based on adoption of Tooling U-SME’s online training program and strong utilization rates of online training in a blended learning format.
The award winners will be announced on toolingu.com on Manufacturing Day, Oct. 3.
